Demian Maia has forged a reputation for being one of the greatest grappler and submission artists the UFC has ever seen. But, apparently that’s not going to stop Gilbert Burns from testing his jiu-jitsu game against the legend’s today.

Burns “can’t wait” to test his BJJ against Maia

Burns was booked to face Maia today following his decision win over Gunnar Nelson in September, which was his fourth straight win. Maia, meanwhile, is coming off an impressive victory over Ben Askren, as he choked out the decorated wrestler in October.

Well, if you follow Burns you know that he’s no stranger to the jiu-jitsu mats either. In fact, the Brazilian is also a ridiculously, accomplished grappler like Maia. Thus, this is likely why the second degree, BJJ black belt recently told MMA Junkie the following, while discussing today’s bout with Maia.

“If we get in the grappling in that fight, guess what, I’m going to be hunting,” Burns said. “I believe I’m capable to pull a submission against Demian Maia.”

“I don’t believe so because I’m fighting Demian Maia, so he’s going to shoot here and there,” Burns said. “Especially if I put him in uncomfortable situations, he’s going to shoot. He’s not going to stand and bang like Colby and Kamaru; he’s Demain Maia. I believe we’re going to strike, but I believe we’re 100 percent going to grapple. I can’t wait for that. I can’t wait to test my abilities against one of the legends in my opinion, future hall of fame.”

“Be honest right now, I’m looking for a finish,” Burns said. “OK, I know that might not happen, the guy is super experienced, he’s got great jiu-jitsu, but we’re going to grapple, and guess what, I’m super hungry right now. I believe I have the power to finish with my hands and with my submissions, too, so I believe that can happen, and if that happens, it’ll be huge for me.”

But will a ground battle ensue?

Now, considering Burns’ own jiu-jitsu pedigree, no one should be surprised to hear that he likes his chances against Maia on the floor. Or that he’s excited to test his BJJ game against Maia’s.

But, most observers would likely agree that Burns has more dangerous striking than Maia. So, chances are we won’t see him shooting in on Maia, looking to take him down. Will Maia be able to score the TD? And if so, will he be able to outscore Burns on the floor? That’s the big question.
