Dan Hooker called out Dustin Poirier last year to no avail. But, now it looks like the rising lightweight is going to throw hands with the perennial contender after all.

Hooker – Poirier is in the works

Following Hooker’s decision win over Al Iaquinta last fall, “The Hangman” relayed he wanted to fight Poirier. The latter, however, wasn’t long removed from a loss to the champ, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and he wasn’t interested (he also underwent hip surgery not long after).

More recently, however, following Hooker’s win over Paul Felder at UFC Auckland, he and Poirier traded verbal shots on Twitter. Now, MMA Junkie is reporting that although contracts haven’t been signed, the UFC is working on having Porier and Hooker fight at a May 16th card in San Diego.

So, here’s hoping this fight happens. On paper, it has the makings of an outstanding fight and it also makes sense from a rankings’ perspective. Hooker is ranked #5 and Poirier is #2.

The tweets

Here are the aforementioned twitter jabs Poirier and Hooker traded, before today’s news of the pending bout.
