Marvel’s The Eternals To Feature MCU’s First Gay Kiss Between Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos And His Husband Played By Haaz Sleiman

Actor Haaz Sleiman confirmed that Marvel’s upcoming Eternals film will feature the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) first gay kiss.

Sleiman spoke to New Now Next [1], where he explained that he plays the husband of Brian Tyree Henry’s character, Phastos.

Sleiman stated, “I just shot a Marvel film with the first openly gay superhero, The Eternals.”

He continued, “I’m married to the gay superhero Phastos, played by Atlanta’s Brian Tyree Henry, and we represent a gay family and have a child.”

He continued, “For me it’s very important to show how loving and beautiful a queer family can be.”

Sleiman then complimented Brian Tyree Henry, “Brian Tyree Henry is such a tremendous actor and brought so much beauty into this part, and at one point I saw a child in his eyes, and I think it’s important for the world to be reminded that we in the queer community were all children at one point. We forget that because we’re always depicted as sexual or rebellious. We forget to connect on that human part.”

Sleiman’s comments confirm Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige’s comments to Good Morning America back in August 2019.

Feige revealed at the time that The Eternals would feature a gay character.

He stated, “He’s married. He’s got a family, and that is just part of who he is.”

A petition [16] was created by Life Site News back in March 2019 after rumors indicated that Marvel Studios was looking to introduce a LGBT character into The Eternals. The petition demands that Marvel Studios “not indoctrinate children with homosexual ideology.”

The petition also stated:

“Be responsible, Marvel, and don’t sexualize our children and teens with your movies.

We call on you to safeguard the impressionable minds of children and their innocence by scrapping the idea to sexualize your ‘The Eternals’ production by making one of the leading characters a homosexual.”

Marvel Studios To Introduce Transgender Character

This confirmation by Sleiman also comes after Kevin Feige seemingly confirmed that a transgender character would be featured in a MCU film that is currently filming.

At a Q&A session part of the New York Film Academy’s Guest Speaker Series, Feige was asked by a fan, “Are there any current plans on bringing more LGBT+ characters into the MCU specifically the T, trans characters.”

Feige responded, “Yes, absolutely. Yes.” He continued, “And very soon. In a movie that we’re shooting right now. Yes.”

However, a report from Variety surfaced indicating that Feige has misspoke and that he only meant there would be LGBT+ characters and not a trans character.

Variety’s Adam B. Vary wrote, “two sources close to the studio tell Variety that Feige intended to respond to the first part about LGBT+ characters, and he did not mean to imply that a trans character will be coming to the MCU ‘very soon.'”
