Donald Trump Jr. broke his silence on Jussie Smollett’s 2019 hate crime claim after the “Empire” star was indicted on six new charges for allegedly lying to the police about being the victim of a Trump-inspired attack in Chicago.
Jussie Smollett’s New Charges Announced
Special prosecutor Dan Webb announced the new charges against Smollett on Tuesday, according to a Fox News report.
The current indictment include six counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly lying to police about the 2019 attack. These new charges come months after Chicago prosecutor Kim Foxx controversially dropped the original set of charges against Smollett.
The charges are result of Smollett’s January 2019 report that he was jumped by two men who shouted homophobic and racist slurs at him while also screaming “this is MAGA country.”
Chicago police later concluded that Smollett had paid two friends to carry out the attack so that he could earn himself more fame and a higher salary on his television show. TMZ asked Trump Jr. yesterday what his thoughts were about the new charges against Smollett.
Trump Jr. Weighs In On Smollett’s Hate Crime Claim
“To incite that kind of violence and that kind of hate,” he said. “You know, I was one of the first people to call it out and say ‘I don’t know man. If these people did it, throw the book at them.’ But like, you know, there are facts that do not seem to make any sense at all.”
Trump Jr. went on to say that nobody is talking about what would have happened if police had narrowed in on a suspect before they realized Smollett might be lying.
“So, you know, it’s scary to think what would have happened if they caught someone else,” he said. “You can’t let that stuff sort of slide. I don’t know what it is, I don’t know what the law says but the whole situation is a terrible one.”
Donald Trump Jr. Doubted Smollett’s Story From The Start
Trump Jr. added that he had been doubtful about details of Smollett’s story from the start. More particularly, the actor’s claim that he went to a Subway sandwich shop at 2 a.m. in freezing temperatures on the night of the attack.
“He may be a decent actor but he’s not a good writer,” Trump Jr. said. “This is just stupid.”
When asked if he thought Smollett would get any jail time, Trump Jr. had a blunt response.
“Probably not because that’s the way it works these days,” he lamented.
Unfortunately, Donald Trump Jr. is probably right. It often seems like liberal celebrities can get away with absolutely anything these days.
However, we can hope for surprise where Smollett gets whatever justice he deserves.
The actor seemingly played on the racial and political divides in this country for his own personal gains. And thus endangering the safety of countless others in the process.
For that, Smollett should be held accountable.
