Recently Chan Sung Jung confirmed that’s going to be out until late summer, on account of minor surgery. But that hasn’t stopped “The Korean Zombie” for driving for a fight with featherweight champ, Alexander Volkanovski.

Jung says focus is Volkanovski

After going 2-0 in 2019, with stoppage wins over Renato “Moicano” and Frankie Edgar, Jung has moved into the #4 ranking in the UFC’s 145 division. More recently, the South Korean star told MMA Junkie that he’s decided to have minor surgery, for an issue with his eye that has him seeing double. The 32-year-old believes he’s going to be ready to fight again, however, before the summer is up.

“Finally, I decided to get the surgery done in Phoenix soon,” Jung said. “I am sure I will be able to get back to the cage around July or August because the surgeon says it is not a big surgery.”

And while talking about his next fight, “TKZ” made it clear he’s still hoping to fight the new champ, Volkanovski.

“Right now, my focus goes on Volkanovski,” Jung said. “If it would not work for me to fight the champion, I would be interested in fighting Ortega – but I want to make sure. At this moment, I want to fight Volkanovski.”

Will Jung get a title shot next time out? Right now, it seems kind of unlikely, as the expectation is that former champ Max Holloway will be given an immediate rematch with Volkanovski (the latter defeated Holloway by decision in December). So, maybe Jung will end up fighting Ortega after all?

The two were supposed to fight in December, but after Ortega went down with an injury, Edgar stepped in. Jung finished the former lightweight champ in the opening round.

And what about a rematch with Yair Rodriguez?

In 2018, Jung faced Rodriguez in what was one of the best fights of the year. It looked like Jung could be headed to victory. But, with one second left,  Rodriguez knocked Jung out with a ducking elbow.

So, would “TKZ” be interested in fighting Rodriguez again? When asked about that possibility, Jung said this:

“Let me make sure I am OK to fight him again,” Jung said. “The fight was great, and that was one of the fights I never want to remove in my career. But I don’t think Yair wants to fight me because he already won the fight against me. I don’t see the reason I need to fight him, either, at this point in time. I expect I will meet him again in the future, and I promise it will be a great fight again.”

Here’s hoping Jung has a full and speedy recovery from his surgery. It will be interesting to see who he fights next.
