Andy Reid letter

Kansas City Chiefs Coach Andy Reid sent a hand-written condolence letter to Peggy O’Donnell whose husband Mike died in Miami before the Super Bowl. Coach Reid had gotten word that this super fan, known to many as Pastor Mike, passed away the night before the game.

Life-long Chiefs fan Michael O’Donnell and his wife Peggy traveled to Florida with the hope of getting tickets to the game to see the Chiefs play in the Super Bowl. Stephanie O’Donnell Albritton said her dad had waited 50 years for the Chiefs to return to the Super Bowl. He told the family that if the Chiefs ever made it to the Super Bowl, he would go.

Unfortunately, this once-in-a-lifetime experience for these Chiefs fans came to a screeching halt when Mike suddenly died of natural causes in his sleep the night before the game.

Pastor Mike’s Spiritual Work

61-year-old ‘Pastor Mike’ started working at Grace Baptist Church in 1982 as a youth pastor and become senior pastor in 1985. He started programs to help children and heal broken families. His ministry expanded beyond his church and included working with youth, prison inmates and restoring broken families.

“Restoring families was probably his greatest life mission in the church and outside of it,” his son, Sedgwick County Commissioner Michael O’Donnell II, said. “Very family-centric and bringing people to Christ. … His goal was to integrate families. He had a father’s program at El Dorado prison that he operated for years.”

People were touched by his spiritual work and word got around quickly about his death. But, his family never expected what would happen next.

The letter arrived poignantly on Peggy’s birthday. This certainly was going to prove to be a challenging day as it was her first birthday without Mike. But, this well-timed letter lifted her spirits. She shared a picture of her holding the letter on Facebook.
Peggy wrote in the Facebook post below:

As many of you know, we were in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale to watch the Chiefs— hoping to get tickets for the Super Bowl — when the Lord called Mike HOME unexpectedly. Today Michael received a note to our family from Andy Reid!! Just another sweet reminder that God is a God of details. It came on my birthday ❤️.

Thank you to everyone for all the birthday wishes, calls, texts, cards gifts and prayers?. I am so blessed by all of you. The Lord is our strength ??

The contents of the letter and a picture of it are below.

“Dear O’Donnell Family –

“I heard through Kim (unreadable last name) from The Church of Jesus Chris of Latter-day Saints about your loss. Not knowing Pastor Mike but reading about him I felt a strong connection. What a wonderful representative of our Heavenly Father. I know you know he’s in good hands. I’m sure he’s spreading That red + yellow spirit to the Heavens. May you find a bit of joy in that as his legacy grows here on Earth. May you remember the good times and may his Spirit live forever with you.

Sincerely,

Andy Reid”
