Urijah Faber

Although Urijah Faber is coming off a fairly one-sided loss to Petr Yan in December, the UFC Hall of Famer has left the door open to more bouts. That said, it sounds like it will take a special kind of opportunity, in order to get the 40-year-old star back in the Octagon.

Faber comments on future

“The California Kid” ended his retirement last July and took out Ricky Simon at UFC Sacramento. As a result of that impressive win, and because of Faber’s remarkable career, he was booked to fight the rising Yan at UFC 245. If Faber had been able to stop the dangerous Russian he would have been left, knocking on the title shot door. But, the Sacramento star took some heavy shots in the bout and was stopped in round three.

So what’s next for Faber? While talking to MMA Junkie recently, the former WEC champ said this:

“I’ll stay fight ready at this point,” Faber said. “There’s no reason not to, and just see what happens. I’ve got to talk with the guys and see if something sounds good. But if I feel the itch, I’m a guy that lives in the moment. And also, it’s a great payday every time you fight, too, on top of being a lot of fun. So it’s something to think about. But (I have) no plans immediately.”

“I just want fights that are going to matter,” Faber said. “I think the fight against Petr Yan was one that was intriguing to me because, first and foremost, although the general public doesn’t know him, with the diehard fans, they understand what a dangerous guy he is. And I know for a fact, he’s going to be in this game for a long time doing big things. I like those kind of fights because you sneak in a win over a guy like that, eight years down the road, he might be the legend that’s coming back or somebody that was a title holder or something like that.”

So will we see “The California Kid” fight again?

Based off the comments above, you have to think there’s a good chance we’ll see Faber fight at least one more time. Although Faber’s days of being a championship contender might be done, he can still be called on to fight top tier, big names. Especially in a replacement role when fighters drop out.

You also have to wonder if Faber could hang around until next January, in case the UFC wants to take a look at him fighting  T.J. Dillashaw, when his suspension ends.
