Prince Harry Meghan Markle Queen Elizabeth

Canadians quickly went from giddy to furious over Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to establish roots in that country. The emotional roller coaster follows the couple’s abrupt and public resignation as senior members of the Royal Family. Reality of the cost and the embarrassment this has caused the 93-year-old Queen has set in. Now, Harry and Meghan are getting a public lashing by Canada’s largest newspaper, The Globe and Mail.

The two may want to reconsider where they are moving because the red carpet is not rolled out for them there. Canadians are notoriously friendly so this editorial is a real slap to the Duke and Duchess.

Canada Is Not A “Halfway House” For Harry And Meghan

“Canada is not a halfway house for anyone looking to get out of Britain while remaining a royal,” the editorial board of The Globe and Mail wrote in a scathing editorial. This marks a stark shift from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s welcome, but, according to The Globe and Mail, Canadians don’t want to be part of Meghan Markle’s manipulation of the Royal Family.

Meghan and Harry announced their separation from their senior Royal responsibilities on Instagram before working things out with the Queen. The Royals were blindsided by how callously and calculated this was done.

The public remains astounded that Harry could treat his aging grandmother and grandfather in this manner. Particularly since Prince Philip was hospitalized over Christmas.

Harry And Meghan’s Security Costs

The Globe and Mail does not want Canada to be responsible for the costs associated with providing protection for Harry and Meghan.

Canadian taxpayers will be footing the bill as Meghan and Harry claim they are “financially independent” from the Crown. They also don’t want their country and citizens to be used as a tool for them to amass their individual fortune at the expense of taxpayers.

The Globe and Mail reminds readers that as a Commonwealth, Canada supports the monarchy but this country is independent. Royals can visit but they cannot stay.

“Canadians like their monarchy, and visits by the Queen and other members of the Royal Family tend to produce outpourings of public enthusiasm. But while the people who embody the Crown pay visits from time to time, they don’t set up a home on the premises. A royal living in this country does not accord with the long-standing nature of the relationship between Canada and Britain, and Canada and the Crown.”

Canada does not have a class system. Allowing Meghan and Harry to settle there while the continue being members of the Royal Family while ditching the responsibilities is not appropriate. In fact, it is downright elitist. There should not be a Canadian branch of the Royal Family as Canada values its independence.

“If they were ordinary private citizens, plain old Harry and Meghan from Sussex, they would be welcome. But this country’s unique monarchy, and its delicate yet essential place in our constitutional system, means that a royal resident – the Prince is sixth in the line of succession – is not something that Canada can allow. It breaks an unspoken constitutional taboo.”

Canada Is Nice – But Not a Doormat

Canada is a very welcoming country, but The Globe and Mail doesn’t want it to be used by Royals as a stepping stone to a new identity. The monarchy and Royal Family belongs at their home abroad.

The Sussexes are working out their own personal issues, and Canadians wish them the best of luck. Canada welcomes people of all faiths, nationalities and races, but if you’re a senior member of our Royal Family, this country cannot become your home.

The government should make that clear. There can be no Earl Sussex of Rosedale and no Prince Harry of Point Grey. Canada is not a halfway house for anyone looking to get out of Britain while remaining a royal.

Meghan Markle felt entitled to a home in Canada. Many wonder if this was part of her master plan to elevate herself.

She married Harry less that two years ago and knew what she was signing up for. Furthermore, Meghan can’t be Queen since Kate and William stand in her way.

Does that factor into any motivations for Meghxit?
