Marine Vet Petitions For ‘Veteran’ To Be Capitalized – It’s ‘A Title And We Earned It’

Patch Baker, a veteran of the United States Marines, started an online movement to capitalize the word “Veteran” as a sign of respect to the men and women who risk their lives to protect our country. The Marine is appealing to the Associated Press (AP) via a petition published on Change.org.

Marine Veteran Fights To Capitalize The “V” In Veteran

The Military Times reported that Marine veteran, Patch Baker, sent a petition to the AP calling on them to alter the style of the word “veteran” so that it will appear capitalized in every reference.

“Marines earn the title of Marine when they cross the Parade Deck on graduation day,” said Baker, who has been a veteran for fifteen years. “Forever after, the title of Marine is capitalized and acknowledged as a proper noun and so should Veteran.”

Baker was inspired to make this petition after he submitted an article to Entrepreneur.com containing each use of the word with a capital V. Afterwards, the editor switched all of the V’s back to lowercase, much to Baker’s dismay.

“It’s super important to me, and all the people that went before me, that know it’s a big deal when you leave the military,” Baker said.

“Veteran is a title and we earned it. The truth of the matter is, whether you served one year or 100 years, you still served your country and that’s a big deal and something deserving of recognition as any other title earned.”

Marine Veteran’s Petition Gains Traction

Patch Baker’s Change.org petition is already gaining traction online, earning nearly 800 signatures as of the time this article was written.

“We need to regard the title of ‘Veteran’ as a proper noun that demonstrates our respect with a capital ‘V,'” he wrote in the petition.

“This one step, embodied in style guides, dictionaries and usage rules throughout the world will demonstrate, fundamentally and inherently, our acknowledgement for all who hold the title of Veterans, in every sense of the word.”

“Please join me and all who are aligned by publishing this statement on social media, signing this petition and by adopting this usage in every communication you make,” Baker continued.

“As a Veteran and former Marine who has lived these experiences deeply, as a business owner and as a U.S. citizen, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support.”
