Irwin

Robert Irwin, son of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, and his family – mom Terri and sister Bindi – are “absolutely heartbroken” about the wildfires destroying parts of Australia. Koalas are currently classified as vulnerable, but Terri Irwin says after these fires, they may need to be classified as endangered.

The sixteen-year-old teared up when he talked about the destruction that is taking place in Australia, and the effect it is having on animals.

“[Animals are] getting hit by cars and are being attacked by domestic animals, so there’s a horrific knock-on effect,” he said. “We’re seeing all kinds of different injuries.”

Robert went on to say that the wildfires are putting both animals and humans at risk of “smoke inhalation and burns.” He added that animals have ended up in “areas where they’re not supposed to be to escape the horrific conditions.”

“It’s definitely an ongoing issue and we’re just trying to do our best to help in any way we can,” Robert said. “It’s a pretty tough situation. We’re absolutely heartbroken.”

Terri Discusses Koalas

Terri Irwin, Steve’s wife, lamented that when koalas are trying to escape from the wildfires, they often climb trees because that’s what makes them feel safe. And, that’s what’s causing their injuries and deaths.

“With a hot fire, the eucalyptus trees have so much oil in their leaves that they ignite and actually explode,” she said. “So being able to treat and help koalas is few and far between because they’re basically incinerated.”

Robert’s older sister Bindi said that her family has been “busier than ever” at the Australia Zoo, which the famous family owns and operates. She also said that her family has treated over 90,000 animals for injuries sustained in the fires.

“I wanted to let you know that we are SAFE,” Bindi told her followers. “There are no fires near us @AustraliaZoo or our conservation properties.”

Hugh Jackman Praises Irwin Family

Hollywood star Hugh Jackman took to Instagram earlier this month to thank the Irwin family for all they are doing for Australia during this difficult time.

“Shout out to the late Steve Irwin’s family – Terri, Bindi and Robert – and all at Australia Zoo for their extraordinary efforts in helping save the Australian wildlife,” Jackman wrote.

Please keep the people and animals of Australia in your thoughts and prayers!
