Jorge Masvidal Thinks He’ll be Making “Owl Soup” Instead of Fighting Conor McGregor
Jorge Masvidal has made it clear he really, really wants to fight Conor McGregor. But, as UFC 246 nears, "Gamebred" believes he's going to end up facing Kamaru Usman next.
One could argue that there’s been more talk Jorge Masvidal vs. Conor McGregor lately, than the latter’s upcoming bout with Donald Cerrone. But, “Gamebred” recently reported he thinks he’s going to end up facing Kamaru Usman next.
Masvidal doubts he’ll fight McGregor
Even before Masvidal fought Nate Diaz in November, the punishing fighter made it clear he was down to fight McGregor. Since McGregor talked about securing the BMF belt, which Masvidal won by defeating Diaz at UFC 244, talk about the stars spiked.
Of course, in order for that fight to be a possibility, McGregor needs to get by Cerrone next Saturday at UFC 246. During a recent interview Masvidal did with Submission Radio, however, “Gamebred” said the following, when asked about the possibility of him fighting McGregor (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“I don’t know if Conor wins it means that he fights me,” Masvidal said. “I really don’t know that. I don’t think so. From watching interviews, hearing things, I don’t think so, man. I think buddy goes a different path, man.
“Maybe I’m just looking into the future. But I don’t think so. I think I’m gonna end up making owl soup [against Kamaru Usman] at some point this year.”
Now, you never know. If McGregor defeats Cerrone on Saturday maybe the “Notorious” star will call for a fight with Masvidal. But, it’s hard to completely dismiss what Masvidal said here. Sure, in the past Masvidal argued the UFC wouldn’t let McGregor fight him out of concern for the star’s well being. In a recent interview McGregor did, however, he did say he’d fight Masvidal, but he also talked about targeting the welterweight title.
In other words, he didn’t really go out of his way to say much about Masvidal, which is kind of surprising. In recent weeks, Masvidal has repeatedly argued he’d hurt McGregor if they ever fought etc. So, the fact McGregor hasn’t responded with similar rhetoric is kind of interesting (for example, McGregor did say Justin Gaethje is now on his hit list, due to things the former WSOF champ has said about him). So, maybe we will see Masvidal challenging the welterweight champ Usman in the not too distant future.

Masvidal was also asked to weigh-on on the headliner for UFC 246, and here’s some of what the veteran had to say:
“It’s just tailor-made for Conor,” Masvidal said. “Flatfooted, right-handed fighter is just custom made for a southpaw with a decent left hand. So, it can be interesting, because even in that mayhem Cowboy can land the knee; he could land the kick. He’s the bigger guy.
“But I think it really depends on Cowboy, what kind of strategy he comes out with.”
Next Saturday could turn out to be one crazy night! UFC 246 will be hosted by the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
