euthanized cat rabies shot

A Texas woman is grieving the loss of her beloved cat after a massive mistake at the veterinarian’s office. Michelle Olson took her cat Sophie in for a routine appointment. Her world was quickly turned upside down when she was informed that Sophie was inadvertently given euthanasia drugs instead of a standard vaccine.

Saying goodbye to a family pet is extraordinarily hard. Michelle is carrying an extra burden given the circumstances behind Sophie’s death. Mistakes happen. That is a part of life. In this case, the mistake was fatal.

Michelle left the vet’s office with sweet Sophie without knowing about the tragic mix up. She hadn’t even made it home by the time Michelle received a call from the vet with the devastating news.

Vet Confuses Euthanasia Shot With Rabies Shot

“It was the doctor herself calling saying, ‘Please get Sophie back here immediately, we gave her euthanasia instead of a rabies vaccine,’” Olson said.

“The appointment after our appointment there was a cat that was ill,” she continued. “It was diagnosed with feline aids and was to be euthanized. The syringe somehow was drawn early,” she said. “It was just sitting there and did not have a label on it and when the doctor asked for the rabies vaccine for Sophie somebody handed her that syringe.”

“I immediately took her out of her cat carrier and I held her, talked to her, because I knew that was going to be the last thing she would remember,” the grieving cat owner said. “I knew she wasn’t going to come back at that point. I just knew it.”

“She pretty much was dying in my arms.”

Attempts To Save Sophie Failed

The staff at the veterinarian’s office tried everything they could to reverse the effects of the drugs. It was just too late and the death shot was just too powerful. Sophie passed away two days later.

“Every time I close my eyes, I see that look on her face and I just can’t get it out of my head,” Olson told KTRK.

“She use to be my little shadow, she would follow me everywhere. I still catch myself turning around looking behind me, looking for her,” Olson said about Sophie.

Despite the massive mistake that cost Michelle her cat, she is not seeking revenge on the vet.

Instead, she wants to raise awareness for pet owners to be involved during appointments.

Pet Owners Beware

“My main concern is not to bash them at all, just want to make public aware to be vigilant, ask questions that you didn’t think you had to ask of your veterinarian so this doesn’t happen to anyone else,” she said in the interview below.
