It’s been over 20 years now since Vitor Belfort stormed through Wanderlei Silva, and “The Phenom” wants to give his fellow legend a chance to avenge that defeat.
Belfort challenges Silva to a rematch
It’s been around ten months now since it was announced Belfort was coming out of retirement to fight under the ONE Championship banner. But, the 42-year-old star has yet to book his promotional debut.
Well, to that end, recently the former UFC champ shared out the comments below:
“THE TIME IS TICKING #42 @wandfc — i heard that you are asking to fight me again?
I hope this is true. I have a Christmas gift for you. — i am willing to give you the most anticipated #rematch that will ever happen in the #mma combat sports history.
Do you accept my GIFT ??
If you do, I already suggest the date and the location. What about the end of February, Singapore ?? @onechampionship #ONE is one of the most growing sports organization in the world ?
Merry Christmas @wandfc
@yodchatri @onechampjp@onechampionship let’s give to this amazing fans, this fight on the best platform of combat sports.”
The footage above is from UFC 17.5 way back in 1998. That finish buzzed the MMA world (which was very small compared to now) big time.
Could Belfort – Silva 2 happen?
So, could this fight happen next spring? It seems like a possibility. There’s no doubt that the fight would garner a fair amount of attention. One sticking point could be if Silva has any exclusive deals right now with a promotion. Recently he did sign with Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship.
In terms of MMA, the 43-year-old Silva (35-14-1) hasn’t fought since Bellator 206 in September, 2018, when he was stopped by “Rampage” Jackson.
Belfort (26-14), meanwhile, hasn’t competed since May, 2018, when he was finished by Lyoto Machida at UFC 224.
