US pro soccer star Megan Rapinoe, who spent much of 2019 actively speaking out against President Donald Trump, was just named the 2019 Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated.
Rapinoe is widely know as the superstar captain for this year’s hugely successful US Women’s soccer team. The talented winger also captains Reign FC out of Seattle in the National Women’s Soccer League. But her soccer talent isn’t the only reason Rapinoe made headlines – she is also a vocal Leftist, advocate for numerous LGBT organizations, and vehement opponent of President Trump.
Sports Illustrated Gives Rapinoe Award
Fox10 Phoenix reported that the December 16 issue of the magazine features Rapinoe holding a sledgehammer on the cover with a triumphant look on her face.

If you’re wondering if this move is political by the sports publishing giant – the answer is a resounding YES. The fact they refer to the honoree as “Sportsperson” should be your first clue.
The longstanding sports publisher touts Rapinoe as “a voice for so many across the world” in the digital article which complements Rapinoe’s splashy magazine cover. There is even a barely veiled jab at the President in the Sports Illustrated article’s masthead which reads:
Playing the world’s game, on the world’s stage, under attack by a world leader, she dominated. And in doing so without fear, Megan Rapinoe became a voice for so many across the world.
Yes, folks. Disrespecting the American President on the world stage earns you accolades – including a prestigious cover spread. But we’ll go into Rapinoe’s history with Trump more later.
Rapinoe Whines About ‘Political Pressure’ She’s Faced
When asked what this honor meant to her, Rapinoe discussed what it was like to win the World Cup. While facing political pressure at the same time. Of course, Rapinoe ignored the fact that she brought this “political pressure” on herself. By refusing to acknowledge the national anthem in any way before her games.
What a disrespectful woman.https://t.co/DEGTgoqdDS

“I feel in a way this year, and particularly the World Cup, gave people not only a motivation and inspiration but almost like a path forward to doing something, doing anything, in a time that feels a little bit paralyzing,” Rapinoe said.
“I feel like I am being recognized on behalf of the team for reasons of trying to do better in the world,” she continued. “Everything we do on the field and off the field, I think this is all going into it. That really means a lot to me. Yes, it is a sports award and you have to go out and perform. But really me winning it, I feel is a win for the good guys.”
Like her good buddy Colin Kaepernick, Rapinoe is trying to make it look like there was something brave and noble about disrespecting the national anthem. In reality, her actions are a slap in the face to the millions of veterans who fought and died for the very flag that she takes for granted.
Rapinoe Bashes President Trump
When she wasn’t disrespecting our flag in 2019, Rapinoe was disrespecting our president. Gleefully taking every opportunity she could to bash Trump.
When asked if she was excited to visit the White House after her World Cup win, Rapinoe was caught on camera saying “I’m not going to the f—ing White House.”
“I would not go, and every teammate that I’ve talked to explicitly about it would not go,” Rapinoe later added to CNN when asked about a potential White House visit.
“I don’t think anyone on the team has any interest in lending the platform that we’ve worked so hard to build, and the things that we fight for, and the way that we live our life — I don’t think that we want that to be co-opted or corrupted by this administration.”
Trump Takes The High Road With Rapinoe
During the World Cup, President Trump did not hesitate to fire back at Rapinoe.
“We haven’t yet invited Megan or the team, but I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose,” Trump said.
“Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team. Be proud of the Flag that you wear.”
Rapinoe is a US soccer star and thus a role model to millions. And this is how she uses it?
It’s disheartening to see a US pro athlete like Rapinoe be rewarded for publicly bashing the very country that has given her all of the many freedoms she holds dear. It’s the the brave men and women who have gave their lives for our flag that affords Rapinoe the freedom to speak out against this country.
Megan Rapinoe- and the team at Sports Illustrated -would do well to remember that.
