Rory MacDonald is making news today and it’s for a somewhat surprising reason, as the former Bellator champ’s announced he’s signed with the Professional Fighters League.
MacDonald entered free agency following his decision loss to current Bellator welterweight champ Douglas Lima in October. More recently, the 30-year-old fighter confirmed with ESPN that he’s signed with the PFL.
In addition, the former UFC contender said this:
“I’m excited to join the PFL where every year the world championship and $1 million belt is there for the best fighter, without any games or politics,” MacDonald said. “I believe in the PFL sport-season format and fighters-first organization.”
Today’s announcement might catch some people off guard, just because there hadn’t been that much talk about MacDonald signing elsewhere. But, it serves as a reminder that there are other players in MMA, outside of the UFC, Bellator and ONE Championship.
It will certainly be interesting to see how MacDonald does in the PFL format. The Canadian heads to the PFL after going 3-2-1 with Bellator, and armed with a record of 21-6-1.
MacDonald initially won Bellator’s 170 title in January, 2018, by defeating the aforementioned Lima via decision.
