Producer and director Jon Cassar had previously announced that The Orville began shooting on Monday, October 21.

Cassar promised there are big plans for Season 3 of The Orville. While at New York Comic Con, Cassar appeared at The Orville panel and detailed the show has double the production schedule they had in the previous two seasons and that “it’s going to be huge.”
He also teased this upcoming season will have more episodes similar to Season 2’s two-part Identity episode which featured an exciting space battle between The Orville and the Kaylons.
“All I can tell you is that after last year’s [episode] ‘Identity’ — [Parts] 1 and 2 — which I’m sure you’ve all seen, is that Seth wants to make all this year all like that. So, I’m telling you right now, that it’s double the production schedule that we had before, and it’s going to be huge.”
The show will also be moving to Hulu from Fox, but with the move comes a little more creative freedom. Executive Producer David A. Goodman elaborates:
“Being on Hulu, being on a streaming service like that gives us a little more freedom — maybe too much! But it’s going to be quite a season. You’re going to have to take my word for it.”
In a statement announcing the show’s move to Hulu, McFarlane noted the move allows the show to continue to pursue an ambitious production.
“But as the show has evolved and become more ambitious production-wise, I determined that I would not be able to deliver episodes until 2020, which would be challenging for the network. So we began to discuss how best to support the third season in a way that worked for the show. It’s exactly this kind of willingness to accommodate a show’s creative needs that’s made me want to stick around for so long.”
With the show’s move to Hulu and its growing popularity, a number of veteran science fiction actors are tossing their hats into the ring to land a part in Seth McFarlane’s show.
Former Star Trek actor Jonathan Frakes has expressed interest in joining The Orville as an alien.
He’s not alone. Stargate SG-1 actor Corin Nemec has also made it clear he wants a role on the show and even indicated he recently sent in an audition for a part.
