After firing insults and threats at each for sometime now, Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington are finally booked to fight at UFC 245, December 14th. But, according to “Chaos”, a fight with his other rival, Tyron Woodley would have driven more views.
The lead-up to Usman vs. Covington
Usman and Covington have been battling through the media for months, and that includes Usman claiming that the controversial fighter ducked multiple opportunities to fight him.
After Usman took the welterweight crown from Woodley in March, a fight with Covington seemed imminent. But, the new champ had to underdog surgery and Covington eventually faced Robbie Lawler in August. After the noted wrestler won that fight, eventually (after some lengthy negotiations), Usman 0 Covington was added to UFC 25.
Covington’s comments about a fight with Woodley
If you’ve followed Covington for a while now, you know that another of his frequent targets the last couple of years has been Woodley. Thus, while talking to MMA Junkie recently, the American Top Team fighter said this:
“No, it’s definitely not as big a fight as the Woodley fight because of how much promoting I put into that fight,” Covington said. “I was two years calling him out after every single fight and you know we had the backstory, we used to train at American Top Team, he was under the same roof as Dan Lambert, Dan Lambert is my agent and there’s so many stories. The bad blood we had, also the political line. He’s a liberal snowflake, I’m team MAGA, I’m dropping MAGA bombs out there so it just had so many different angles to the fight with Woodley.”
“This fight with ‘Marty Fake Newsman’ there’s not a lot of angles,” Covington said. “I mean he’s a boring fighter, no one cares about him. The only reason people are going to be tuning in on Dec. 14, it’s because they want to see me win or they want to see me get knocked out but they’re only tuning in to see me, they don’t care about him. So it kinda sucks that I lost the Woodley fight but it is what it is.”
Now Covington’s “Chaos” bit aside, it’s hard to argue that a fight with Woodley wouldn’t have been bigger. After all, Woodley held the belt for well over two years and he has a fairly big platform, thanks to his commentating duties and gig with TMZ. But, if Usman can take out one of the most polarizing fighters in the game, his profile will rise considerably.
UFC 245 will be hosted by the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 14th.
