Dominick Reyes took out Chris Weidman in impressive fashion at UFC Boston, and has gone undefeated to date. But, it doesn’t sound like Jon Jones is completely sold on fighting the rising contender just yet.
Reyes took on Weidman in the headliner of Friday’s card, and put the former middleweight champ in the opening round. With the victory, Reyes moved his overall record to 12-0 and the victory was his sixth straight in the Octagon. After the big win, Reyes, as many expected he would, called for a fight with the 205 champ Jones.
Well, following Reyes’ win and callout, it didn’t long before Jones responded. Here’s some of what the renowned fighter had to say (warning: explicit language).
Many have talk sh-t, all have fallen. You will do the same
I should just wait for the winner of DC and Stipe? Let these light heavies figure out who’s going to present the best challenge
Probably going to need a few months to pack on some muscle anyway
Reyes proceeded to respond with this:
Let’s run it and see who falls.
So what’s the takeaway here? Well, when you consider Reyes is ranked #4, that he’s gone undefeated in the UFC, and that Jones has already defeated many of top contenders, you can certainly make the case for a Jones – Reyes fight.
But, is there a lot of interest right now in seeing Jones fight Reyes? Hardcore fans probably want to see it, but Reyes isn’t far removed from a tightly contested, split decision win over Volkan Oezdemir, and he doesn’t appear to be a mainstream commodity just yet. In other words, there’s no doubt that there would be way, way, way more interest in seeing Jones fight either Miocic or Cormier for the heavyweight title.
So, we’ll see what happens here. Cormier, it should be noted, as said he’s hanging up the gloves after he faces Miocic in the rubber match, regardless of the outcome.
