Stipe Miocic Daniel Cormier

There’s been no shortage of talk about whether Daniel Cormier will return for another fight, following his devastating loss to Stipe Miocic last month. While some people believe “DC” should close the book on his storied career, his longtime buddy, Khabib Nurmagomedov hopes Cormier returns for a rubber match with Miocic.

Cormier’s future following UFC 241

Cormier’s reign as the heavyweight champ came to an end at UFC 241 last month, as the decorated fighter was taken out by Miocic in the fourth round. It marked the second time the heavyweights had fought, as Cormier took the title from Miocic last summer via first round, KO.

Since Cormier initially said he wouldn’t fight past his 40th birthday earlier this year, there’s been extensive debate as to whether the star will return for one more bout. Following the devastating loss, Cormier said he was taking some time to consider his next move.

Khabib’s comments

Well, as Khabib gets set to fight Dustin Poirier next weekend at UFC 242, the lightweight champ was asked to comment on Cormier’s loss and his friend’s future. Here’s some of what the undefeated fighter had to say (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“When DC loses, it was a very sad moment for us,” Nurmagomedov said. “Same time, Cain Velasquez lost his mother and after a couple of days, DC lost his father. It was a little bit hard week for all AKA team but it is what it is. When God wants something, nobody can change this. Losing the belt is nothing when you lose your father or mother. When you lose belt, of course DC is sad but when you lose you father, it’s completely different.

“We feel bad for him but we know how DC is a competitor, how DC is strong. I want to wish him good luck. We just talked with him a couple of days ago. We talked with him about my fight, we talk about his fight, about his father, but I just try to give him good energy…”

“I really want him to fight with Stipe Miocic rematch and finish his career,” Nurmagomedov said. “This is what I want.

“I don’t know about his plan but honestly I want him to fight maybe February or March, fight with him last fight and then finish.”

Interesting and moving comments from Khabib. Now it will be interesting to see if Cormier does decide to return for a rubber match with Miocic. If he decides he wants to, there’s no question the UFC will be on board.

Nurmagomedov – Poirier will headline the September 7th, UFC 242 card, which will take place in Abu Dhabi.
