Following Jan Blachowicz’s big, knockout win over Luke Rockhold in July, has the light-heavyweight contender locked up a fight with champion Jon Jones? Due to recent tweets both men have made, some are wondering if that’s the case.

Tweets from Jones and Blachowicz

Recently Jones, who is coming off a split decision win over Thiago Santos at UFC 239, tweeted out the comment below:

Buckle your seatbelt my friends, Big fiight announcement coming soon

And…Blachowicz recently tweeted this:

Birds are twittering that the fight is coming…

As a result, some are wondering if Jones – Blachowicz could be in the works?

Is Blachowicz getting a title shot?

So, there’s a couple of things to look at here. Would Jones’ describe a fight with Blachowicz as “big”? No offense to the powerful, Polish fighter, but he’s not exactly a household name here in North America, and he’s not far removed from a loss to Thiago Santos. Of course, it’s also very probable that Jones is just doing his part to promote the fight.

Further, since Daniel Cormier was taken out by Stipe Miocic in his last outing, it seems very unlikely that we’ll see Jones – Cormier 3. Prior to UFC 241, the consensus was that if Cormier beat Jones again, a third bout could materialize.

So, when you look at the 205 ranks, there aren’t a lot of options for Jones in the short term, aside from Blachowicz. The latter is ranked #5, and the only fighter ranked above him who Jones hasn’t already beaten is Dominick Reyes. Chris Weidman, however, is booked to fight Reyes at UFC 244, November 2nd.

Of course, some will wonder / hope if Miocic – Jones might be in the works, as there’s been talk about that in the past. But, more recently Jones has said he’s focused on extending his reign at 205.
