Poirier UFC 242

Dustin Poirier went to Abu Dhabi to make history.

“The Diamond” came up short, though, as he fell via submission to Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 242. The bout was for the unified lightweight title, as Poirier entered the interim champion.

Nurmagomedov, the reigning UFC lightweight titleholder, remained unbeaten in his career.

“Didn’t get the result I wanted Saturday,” Poirier wrote on social media after returning home Monday. “This is what happens sometimes when you’re chasing greatness. I gave this my all. I’m down but not out.”

Poirier had won the interim title with a thrilling victory over current UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway earlier this year. It remains unknown at this time what could be next for the top contender.

“Thank you for the kind messages and support,” he added. “It means the world to me. This one really hurts. It’s a huge that I’m very familiar with.”
