Dustin Poirier

Dustin Poirier was understandably devastated by his loss this past weekend, and the lightweight contender sounded uncertain about what his future held. But, clearly “The Diamond” is now looking forward, and that includes calling for a rematch with Conor McGregor.

Poirier’s loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov

Poirier was tapped for a title fight with the Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242, after winning the interim belt this past April, by defeating Max Holloway. Although Poirier had a couple of memorable moments in the title fight, the undefeated champ tapped him out with a third round, rear-naked-choke.

After the loss, a disappointed Poirier didn’t explicitly commit to fighting again. But, on Tuesday, the rugged vet tweeted out this:

I think me and Conor running it back makes a lot of sense at this point.

Could McGregor – Poirier 2 happen?

There’s no doubt that a rematch between these two would garner plenty of interest. You can say that about pretty much any McGregor fight, and Poirier has become an ever bigger draw in recent years. Further, both men are now coming off losses to Khabib. So, that’s kind of an interesting angle.

But, you have to question what McGregor stands to gain by taking this fight? He quickly defeated Poirier back in 2014, and one would think a bout with the winner of Justin Gaethje – Donald Cerrone, would be as big as a rematch with Dustin. So, when you consider McGregor’s still been pushing for a rematch with Nurmagomedov, is a rematch with Poirier something that will interest him? In the near future? Maybe we’ll hear from the star on this soon.

McGregor hasn’t fought since last October, when he was submitted by Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.
