Dana White Argues Promoters Are “Nuts” to Have Canelo vs. Sergey Kovalev Same Night as UFC 244
November 2nd will feature both UFC 244 as well as boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez taking on Sergey Kovalev. Well, Dana White claims the promoters and DAZN have made a big mistake by booking tha fight on the same night.
If you’re a big boxing and MMA fan, then chances are you’re already thinking about how you can catch both Nate Diaz versus Jorge Masvidal and Canelo Alvarez versus Sergey Kovalev on November 2nd. But, as far as Dana White’s concerned, the promoters for Canelo and Kovalev are “crazy” for booking the all-star boxing match the same night as UFC 244.
Canelo vs. Kovalev
Now, if you don’t follow boxing..at all, then you may not be aware of why a fight between Canelo and Kovalev is kind of a big deal for fans of the sweet science. In Canelo, you have one of the biggest names in boxing, if not the biggest, who is not far removed from a win over fellow superstar, Gennady Golovkin.
Kovalev’s profile has taken a bit of hit, on account of the fact he’s lost three fights since 2016. But, prior to that, Kovalev had gone undefeated and had forged a reputation for being one of the most dangerous boxers in the sport. Further, Canelo is attempting to win a title in a fourth weight class by moving up to face Kovalev. So, there’s that compelling angle as well.
The UFC held a pre-fight presser this week for the November 2nd, UFC 244 card, which as noted above, will be headlined by Diaz vs. Masvidal. When asked about the fact Canelo – Kovalev is taking place the same night, White said this (quotes via MMA Junkie):
“We started talking about this date, and then a week later, I heard they were going to do that fight,” White said. “I think they’re crazy to go the same night as us on DAZN, but it is what it is.”
“If they time it right and they do this thing the right way, it could be very much like the other night (at UFC on ESPN+ 16), when (Justin) Gaethje fought (Donald) ‘Cowboy’ (Cerrone), and then the (Tyson) Fury fight was on after. If they time it right, it could work out. But if they want to go head to head, they’re (expletive) nuts.”
It will be interesting to see whether Canel – Kovalev impacts pay-per-view sales for UFC 244. While MMA fans will almost certainly go with Diaz – Masvidal as a priority, casual combat sports fans may be tempted to opt for Canelo – Kovalev.
There’s also the possibility that some fans will try to watch both. UFC 244 is a PPV event, buy Canelo – Kovalev will be streamed on DAZN. So, as White noted, there’s a chance Diaz – Masvidal will be over before Canelo – Kovalev goes down.
