Daniel Cormier’s Future Plans Should Include WWE Run

Former UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier suffered a crushing defeat recently at UFC 241 when he was knocked out by Stipe Miocic for the title.

Cormier, who also previously held the UFC light heavyweight title, is far from a “broken” fighter, but the former U.S. Olympic wrestler has stated for months now that the end is near inside the Octagon.

Last year, Cormier remarked that he wanted to have his last fight and retire either right before or immediately after he turned 40 years old. Well, in March, “DC” hit the 40 mark but a previous injury forced him to wait a few months before his rematch with Miocic. All of that, of course, came about when the UFC and Brock Lesnar were unable to come to agreement for a fight, with Lesnar returning to the WWE.

Cormier and Lesnar had their exciting exchange after he topped Miocic in the first meeting, and most were on the edge of their seats waiting for the MMA fight to happen. But what about Cormier vs. Lesnar inside the WWE ring?

Already a huge pro wrestling fan, Cormier has teased the idea in the past. In fact, his close friend and training partner, Cain Velasquez, recently made his in-ring debut at Triplemania XXVII where he earned high remarks despite being green to the sport.

Like Velasquez, Cormier was a standout amateur wrestler, reaching an even higher mark when he qualified for the Olympics. He has already started to prepare for a life post-MMA by working with FOX under their previous deal with the UFC and by coaching high school wrestling.

But will Cormier miss the spotlight and the thrill of live competition? That could be exactly what drives him to attempt and follow the likes of Lesnar, Velasquez, Ronda Rousey, Matt Riddle and others into the pro wrestling world.

Returning To FOX

SmackDown moves to FOX in October, and a big splash like that of Cormier signing with the promotion would make for incredible headlines. The idea of being able to feed off the Cormier-Lesnar angle from their UFC face off would make for an easy publicity push, with Cormier even having already showed his ability to play the “heel” in certain feuds in mixed martial arts over the years.

Immediately following the loss to Miocic, Cormier stated plans to take time, talk to his coaches and family before making a decision on his future. A third meeting with Miocic would be an easy move for both the UFC and former champion, but the prospects of a pro wrestling career are also right there for Cormier.
