Jorge Masvidal

Jorge Masvidal has done his best to lock up a shot at the UFC’s welterweight title. But, if that doesn’t materialize, the rugged vet’s declared he wants to fight Conor McGregor…

The MMA world is still buzzing over Masvidal’s electrifying, KO of Ben Askren at UFC 239 last weekend, which came via a flying knee and punches in just 5 seconds. Heading into UFC 239, the consensus was that the winner of Askren – Masvidal would have a strong case for a bout with weltereweight champ, Kamaru Usman, if, they scored an emphatic win.

Well, Masvidal has been doing plenty of media since the win, not surprisingly. During a recent appearance on The Dan LeBatard Show,“Gamebred” reportedly said this, while discussing possible fights, outside of a title shot (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“I want McGregor,” Masvidal said. “I want to break his face. I think that’s an easy paycheck. He’s got these cash symbols written all over his face for me. I just don’t see it going his way if I’m honest with you.”

“It’s just a fight that, if we made it, it’s going to sell a lot. I’m going to get the money that I deserve, and you can see: You put me there in a fight, and I’m going to fight,” Masvidal said. “I’m going to give you what the fans want. I’ve never pulled out of a fight.”

How about that? Now, there’s no question that a lot of folks would love to see this fight. Especially right now. But would McGregor be interested? Hard to say.

If the UFC communicated to McGregor that a win over Masvidal would push him into a title fight at 155, then maybe. The question is, would the UFC say that? And would fans buy that? Since Masvidal hasn’t been fighting at 155 lately? He is knocking on the title shot door at 170.

Then there’s just the matter of getting McGregor to sign on to any non-title fight. At a time when non-title fights are apparently not going to headline any pay-per-view card, and in the new ESPN – PPV era.

But, who knows. Maybe McGregor will see fighting Masvidal as a means to stake a title shot claim at either lightweight or welterweight?
