Now that Josh Emmett has put another stoppage win between himself and his devastating loss to Jeremy Stephens, the featherweight’s confidence seems to have reached new heights.
Emmett took on Mirsad Bektic at UFC Sacramento this past weekend, and proceeded to finish the latter with booming punches in round one. It was a massive and impressive win for Emmett, as Bektic had gone 6-1 in UFC bouts prior to Saturday. The victory was also Emmett’s second, stoppage win since he was finished by Stephens in 2016. Back in March, Emmett KO’d Michael Johnson in round three.
So, what’s next for Emmett? While discussing his future after UFC Sacramento, as well as his awe-inspiring power, the Team Alpha Male member said this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“I possess a lot of power. Any strike, I’m throwing it with bad intentions. Mirsad is a tough competitor. … I felt his strength and knew I had more.”
“I want to fight people in front of me. I want someone in the top five or three to get me closer to that title fight. I’m in this because I want to be a world champion. I feel like I’m the best in the world. I got into this later than most, so I want to fight the best. I want to get closer to that title fight. That’s my ultimate goal and I’m on my way.”
Could Emmett lock up a fight with a top five ranked contender next? It’s possible, but he may need some things to bounce his way first. Emmett is currently ranked #10, and when you consider how hard he hits, there may not be too many top contenders begging for that match-up. After all, if you’re sitting near the top, fighting Emmett could easily be seen as a high risk, little reward kind of gig.
But, if an opponent falls out due to injury, you never know. Emmett could get his wish.
