Comments From Dana White Point to Henry Cejudo Defending 125 Title Next

It remains to be seen when, who and at what weight Henry Cejudo fights next. But, recent comments from UFC President Dana White indicate that the promotion wants the champ-champ to defend the flyweight title next.

Since Cejudo won the 135 title last month, by taking out Marlon Moraes, there’s been plenty of talk about what will come next for the decorated fighter. After the historic win, Cejudo called out notable bantamweights like Urijah Faber and Cody Garbrandt. While Cejudo talked about saving the flyweight division, he also noted the division would be okay without him, and pointed to Joseph Benavidez as evidence of that fact.

Well, recently TMZ caught up with White, following Faber’s comeback win over Ricky Simon at UFC Sacramento. When asked about the possibility of Faber getting a shot at Cejudo’s 135 belt, White said this (quotes via MMA Mania):

“Joe (Benavidez), yeah,” White said. “Next he should defend that title. He would go to 125, defend that title, then we would decide who he fights next. As long as Cejudo is willing to defend both titles, I think he is a guy who can carry both of them, both divisions.”

Since Cejudo is recovering from shoulder surgery, and isn’t expected to return until early 2020, this would make sense. As of January, 2020, it will be approximately one year since Cejudo defended the 125 title by stopping T.J. Dillashaw.

But, this is assuming Cejudo does in fact, plan to compete at 125 moving forward. If he doesn’t, will the UFC continue to keep the flyweight division around? Here’s hoping yes, but it’s certainly not something you’d want to bet the farm on.
