Could UFC 241 Mark The End of Daniel Cormier’s Storied Career?

In more recent months, the expectation’s been that Daniel Cormier will, in fact, fight a few more times. But, based on comments the legend recently made, one could question whether that’s going to be the case.

If you’ve followed Cormier over the years, then you know for some time he said he wasn’t going to fight past his 40th birthday this past March. But, as Cormier waited to see if a bout with Brock Lesnar might materialize, and as he was sidelined with injuries, it became clear “DC” wasn’t retiring yet.

In addition, Cormier talked about his desire to face his rival Jon Jones one more time. Dana White has also said he thinks Cormier has a few fights left. As a result, since it was announced that Cormier was going to fight Stipe Miocic again on August 17th, there hasn’t that much talk about it being the last of career.

Well, recently TMZ Sports spoke with Cormier, and he was asked about whether he plans to fight beyond UFC 241. The former light-heavyweight champ, and the reigning heavyweight king said this (quotes via MMA Mania):

“You know I always said that I was going to fight until I turned 40, which would have been March at a card March 2nd, but I couldn’t make that one,” said Cormier. “If I hold true to what I was saying then this would be the final one. I don’t anticipate fighting much past this. I just want to go out there and do my thing.”

Now, Cormier didn’t say this would be his last fight. So, since he didn’t say that, it sounds like no final decision has been made. But, the fact Cormier didn’t come out and explicitly mention fighting Jones one more time is definitely noteworthy. Could it be that as Cormier’s begun preparing for Miocic, he’s questioning whether he can make 205 again? Jones has repeatedly distanced himself from fighting Cormier at heavyweight, so, that option doesn’t appear to be in the cards.

Cormier ended Miocic’s reign as champion last July, by knocking out the Ohio fighter in round one. UFC 241 will take place in Anaheim, California.

Here is the line-up for the event so far:

Daniel Cormier vs. Stipe Miocic
Nate Diaz vs. Anthony Pettis
Paulo Costa vs. Yoel Romero
Raphael Assuncao vs. Cory Sandhagen
Derek Brunson vs. Ian Heinisch
John Makdessi vs. Devonte Smith
Gabriel Benitez vs. Sodiq Yusuff
