Chip and Joanna Gaines

Chip and Joanna Gaines, known for their television show “Fixer Upper,” are widely considered to have one of the strongest marriages in the entertainment world. That’s why it came as somewhat of a surprise this week when Chip opened up about how much he had “to change” before he married the love of his life.

Fox News reported that Chip, 44, revealed that while he is a devoted family man now, he was a very different person during his bachelor days, which he had a hard time leaving behind.

“I really wasn’t that guy,” Chip said. “I dated girls whose goal in life was to get married and have kids. They had it all planned out, but I was too selfish. It was about me and what I wanted to do, and I didn’t have anything tying me down.”

He went on to say that everything changed for him when he met Joanna as she worked at her dad’s automotive shop in Waco, Texas.

“It felt like there was this real transition. I matured and grew up,” he explained. “It just kind of clicked in my brain: ‘This is going to work.'”

After the couple got married in 2003, Chip found that there were still many changes that he had to make in his life.

“I had to make a lot of changes. I had to be a better person,” he said. “But when I thought about the idea of being an 80-year-old man sitting on a rocking chair with my beautiful wife, and for she and I to have made it [that far], I got really excited.”

These days, things are better than ever for the couple as they just celebrated their sixteenth wedding anniversary. They are also the parents of five wonderful children: Drake, 14, Ella, 12, Duke, 10, Emmie, 9, and Crew, 11 months.

While Chip and Joanna are known to the public as a successful duo, he credits all of his success to her.

“I tell my kids this a lot,” Chip said. “She’s the one that makes this whole thing go around.”
