Henry Cejudo made history last weekend at UFC 238, by taking out Marlon Moraes to become the promotion’s latest, champ-champ. After his thrilling win, the flyweight and bantamweight champ relayed that he also hopes to grab the featherweight title too. Well, another man who hopes to fight for the 145 crown, Alexander Volkanovski, recently had an interesting take on Cejudo’s plan…

As you likely know, Volkanovski has been doing his part and then some to secure a title shot. The Australian fighter has gone 7-0 now since arriving in the UFC, and the rising star’s defeated Chad Mendes and the legendary Jose Aldo. After the 30-year-old defeated Aldo last month, Volkanovski called for a title shot, but that ultimately went to Frankie Edgar, who will face the champ Max Holloway, July 27th.

Well, more recently Volkanovski spoke with Submission Radio, and here’s what he had to say about Cejudo’s 145, aspirations (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“Stay in your lane, Henry. Come on mate,” Volkanovski said.

“Honestly, what he’s done is unbelievable. It was good on him. I actually picked him to win. I didn’t expect him to have so many problems earlier. I knew the guy was powerful. Maybe the ankle was why was he was sort of cowering to the kicks a little bit, if you know what I mean. . . So for him to overcome that and get it done, good on him. Him coming to 145, you gotta be quick in this division, but we’re still quick and we’re just a whole another powerful type of beast. And we’re a stacked division, a lot of very tough guys in our division that I don’t think he’ll want any of that…”

“…Well, he ain’t gonna take me down, and if he does, I’m getting back up. And again, I got the cardio, and then again, I’m just gonna be too powerful. And again, I’m good on the outside. He’s gonna be a lot shorter than me. You see what I can use in my range, even with tall people, imagine what I could do to someone half my size. That will be interesting. But look man, again, he’s an athlete, he really is, he’s explosive, he still would be dangerous and quick, but at the same time, I just think he’ll have a puncher’s chance. But him being that light, I don’t think that’s likely.”

At 5’4, Cejudo would certainly give up a lot of height and reach to many featherweights, including the champ Holloway. Now if Edgar were to win, who’s 5’6, then not so much.

But, at the end of the day it’s difficult to see this happening anytime soon. UFC President Dana White has already said Cejudo needs to focus on the titles he currently holds.
