Conor McGregor Has no Doubt he Would Beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Boxing Rematch…

The consensus seems to be that the only way Conor McGregor could beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. would be in a MMA or possibly a kickboxing bout. But, the Irish superstar says he’s certain he can beat the undefeated fighter in under boxing rules.

As you surely know, McGregor faced Mayweather Jr. back in 2017, in what was one of the biggest fights of all time. McGregor had some success early on in the boxing match, but Mayweather Jr. took over the fight as it went on, and stopped the former UFC champ in round ten.

Well, although the MMA world has kind have moved on from that fight, McGregor was asked about it during a recent interview he did with Tony Robbins. While discussing the fight, the “Notorious” one said this (quotes via MMA Mania):

“I would love another go in the boxing arena,” said McGregor (transcription via MMA Weekly). “Floyd is known for his Philly-shell defensive style of fighting. He has his right arm tucked in, or he’s orthodox so it’s the opposite, but he has one arm tucked in by his belly and one arm kept up by his ear. He uses his shoulder to deflect shots. He’s a back footed fighter, he fights on the back foot.”

“That’s what I prepared for because that is all I had seen of him. My sparring partners were fighters on the back foot, fighting defensive, back against the ropes and then when I went into the fight in the early rounds, I was whooping him in the early rounds. I actually went back to my corner after the first round and said ‘this is easy’. I literally said that to my corner man, this is easy and then he had to switch up his style.”

“I believe I would win,” said McGregor, while discussing a rematch. “Actually, there I go again with the fake humbleness — I know I would win.”

Now, many observers opined that Mayweather Jr. was just being cautious in bout’s opening rounds. Other’s have argued that the undefeated boxer was just carrying McGregor during the initial stages of the fight, as a means to prolong the contest (which cost a pretty penny to buy).

At the end of the day, it seems highly unlikely that we’ll see Mayweather Jr. – McGregor 2 in the boxing ring. The decorated boxer is now 42, and it’s hard to imagine that there would be much buzz for a rematch under boxing rules. Especially since McGregor has fought just once since that contest, and that was a loss he incurred against UFC lightweight champ, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
