When Fighters Cross the Line: Conor vs. Khabib Edition

Usually, fighters turn to social media to hype up an upcoming fight, or interact with their fans. But occasionally, things go a bit awry.

This week, it was all about former champ Conor McGregor [1] and reigning champ Khabib Nurmagomedov. If you’ll recall, ol’ Khabib laid a significant beating on McGregor the last time they met. But the Irish combat sports superstar is never one to let a beatdown get in the way of good trashtalk, so of course McGregor still fires off shots at the Dagestani wrestler.

But this past week, things got a little out of hand. First, McGregor called Khabib’s wife a towel (note: the intersection between Muslim tradition anti-Islamic tropes here). That Twitter post was taken down, but MiddleEasy [2] has some screenshots if you’re curious.

Sadly, things escalated from there, with Khabib (or more likely his manager, Ali Abdel-Aziz) posting this little gem:

Given that McGregor is under investigation in Ireland in a rape case, this barb ventured far into the realm of inappropriate. So much so that boss Dana White [6] had to jump in.

“I am aware of the recent social media exchange between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor. The ongoing situation has escalated to a level that is unacceptable. As such, we are taking the necessary steps to reach out to both athlete camps and this situation is being addressed by all parties internally.”

So. Fighters crossing the line and going too far. That pretty much describes this week. How soon until this turns into an East Coast vs. West Coast rap feud and both men end up shot?

On the plus side, it appears McGregor’s retirement is over.
