Last week, we reported that liberals were outraged over a newly-surfaced 1971 interview in which actor John Wayne made controversial comments about race and homosexuality. Now, liberals have launched a campaign calling for Wayne’s name to be removed from a Southern California airport over the comments.
Fox News reported that reporter Michael Hilzik just wrote an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times in which he called for the Orange County airport to be renamed.
“Orange County today is such an economically and ethnically diverse community that it’s hard to justify asking any member of that community to board planes at an airport named after an outspoken racist and homophobe, with his strutting statue occupying a central niche in front of the concourse,” Hilzik wrote.
Hilzik went on to say that naming the airport after Wayne in 1979 reflected the country’s conservative values at the time, but he added that since then, liberal politics have completely taken over.
“That should be evident from the results of November’s election, in which voters turfed out the county’s last remaining GOP members of Congress — some of whom had embraced Donald Trump in a fruitless effort to save their careers–and elected an all-Democratic congressional delegation,” Hiltzik wrote.
Others, however, have continued to defend Wayne and have said that the airport should not be renamed.
“Removing his name from Orange County’s airport now only validates what many Americans are coming to believe: You can’t say anything anymore, darn it, without being discovered and punished by the mob,” Madeline Fry wrote in a piece for the Washington Examiner.
Fry hits the nail on the head with this. While Wayne’s comments were not right, they were made nearly fifty years ago in a totally different time. We can’t look at comments made in the past through a modern lens, especially when we live in a time of oversensitivity and political correctness. Liberals need to put their pitchforks down and allow John Wayne to rest in peace.
