Coach Wanted Derrick Lewis to Withdraw From UFC Wichita Due to Pre-Fight Injury

Derrick Lewis [1] was taken out by Junior dos Santos last weekend at UFC Wichita [2], but it looks like the heavyweight went into the contest far from being 100%.

Lewis faced the former champ in the card’s headliner, and after being hurt by a spinning kick to the body in round one, he was finished by dos Santos in round two. After the fight Helen Yee reported [3] that sources in Lewis’s camp had informed her the fighter tore his meniscus, ACL and MCL during camp, but refused to drop out of the bout.

More recently, Lewis’s coach, Bob Perez told MMA Junkie [4] this:

“I was like, ‘Dude, we’ve gotta pull,’” Perez said. “But Derrick’s like, ‘Hell no.’”

In between rounds one and two, Lewis’s corner could be heard saying he needed to finish the fight, following the body shot he took..

“I didn’t know the extent of the injury in regards to his knee or his belly,” said Perez.

Now does any of this mean JDS wouldn’t have won the fight if Lewis was 100%? No, and we don’t know, “Cigano” may have fought with an injury as well. But, this news is interesting nonetheless.

Hopefully Lewis has a speedy and full recovery.
