Conor McGregor was quick to congratulate Anthony Pettis on his win Saturday night, but “Showtime’s” provided both a possible date and weight class for a showdown with the star.
Pettis took out Stephen Thompson at UFC Nashville, and in doing so, he joined McGregor and Kenny Florian as the only fighters to score wins in the Octagon at 145, 155 and 170. McGregor congratulated Pettis on the achievement, before putting out an open challenge to the roster.
Pettis caught word of McGregor’s tweet, and when asked about the possibility of facing McGregor, the former lightweight champ said this (quotes via MMA Junkie):
“That’s a fun fight. (He’s) another guy that I love his style, another guy that’s going to be a fun style to fight.”‘
“Showtime” also reportedly mentioned UFC 239, during Internation Fight Week in July, as a possible card for the bout (since that’s when he wants to fight next). In terms of the weight, however, Pettis suggested the fight go down at 170.
“We’re both natural, I think, there,” Pettis said. “If it’s not for a title, why cut?”
Fair enough. The question is, however, is a fight with Pettis something McGregor wants next? Recently the star relayed that he and Nate Diaz need to complete their trilogy. So, one would think that if the UFC can get Diaz on board with that match-up, McGregor would opt for that.
