Cain Velasquez’s longtime buddy and teammate, Daniel Cormier, hasn’t been able to hand Jon Jones his first, real defeat. But does the UFC’s former heavyweight champ think he could do so? Yes. Yes he does.

Velasquez is preparing to return to the cage this Sunday at UFC Phoenix, as the well-rounded fighter is going to battle feared slugger, Francis Ngannou. Recently TMZ Sports caught up with Velasquez, and while discussing whether he could beat Jones, the AKA fighter said this (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“[I will fight] anyone,” Velasquez said. “That’s why I’m in this sport: to fight the best guys, to be the best out there. To me, go out there and perform and win and take on the best guys.”

“I think I could. I think I’m good enough. Jon Jones is an amazing athlete. I’ve watched him in all his fights, I know what he’s capable of. Again, every guy poses a great challenge and I think he does as well but I think I can beat him.”

Now sure, the fact Velasquez said this shouldn’t really come as a surprise. But, it’s an interesting question: Velasquez is a similar fighter to Cormier, in terms of how comprehensive their offense is but he’s also taller than “DC”.

Further, the fight would go down at heavyweight, and there are certainly folks who believe Cormier could indeed, beat Jones at that weight class.
