Prince Harry and his expectant wife, Meghan Markle, will be in attendance at a morning reception at Buckingham Palace along with Prince William and Kate Middleton despite reported ongoing disputes between the two couples.

The reception marks the 50th anniversary of Prince Charles’ investiture as the Prince of Wales.

“Among the guests will be leading figures in Welsh and UK public life, as well as representatives from The Prince of Wales’ many Welsh charities and patronages,” a statement from Buckingham Palace said. “The Investiture Regalia worn by The Prince of Wales in 1969 will be on display, including the Investiture Coronet, Sword, Ring and Rod, as well as the Letters Patent for the creation of Charles, Duke of Cornwall as Prince of Wales in 1958.”

Trouble in Buckingham

Meghan’s celebrity-studded and glitzy baby shower in the U.S. last week — which was hosted in tennis star Serena William’s suite at The Mark Hotel in New York City — is reported to be the possible cause of dissension between the couples. Princess Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, who worked for decades with both Queen Elizabeth and the late Lady Di, offered some insight into why displays like Markle’s baby shower would rub William and Kate the wrong way.

“I think William, as well as Kate Middleton, will be totally bewildered by why Meghan is doing all this, as there’s no excuse for over-indulgence or excess and that’s what it seems to me,” Burrell wrote in an article last week. “Although William mixes with A-list celebrities, he doesn’t take them home with him, they aren’t his friends. They are people he works with. The celebrity world in which Meghan was submerged seems to be where all her friends are, and that can only spell disaster.”

Prince William and Katherine had only a small, private baby shower for her first child, Prince George, Burrell also noted in stark relief to Meghan’s big, American bash.

Burrell remarks that William and Kate have worked hard over the years to maintain a distinction between public royal life and their private family moments.

“I think Prince William will be angered by all of Meghan’s lavish extravagance this week and the fact her baby shower looked so ‘celebrity’ rather than ‘royal.’ He has spent years working with the press to give them what they want but also gets what he wants in return — privacy. Meghan is doing exactly what he doesn’t — courting attention all for her and her baby.”

Burrell goes on to say that there is a difference between celebrity and life as a member of the royal family.

“There is a clear line between the two, and Meghan doesn’t know the difference,” he wrote.

As with most families incorporating new members and in-laws into the fold, there are bound to be some disagreements. At least the two couples seem able to put aside any hard thoughts or feelings to celebrate their father.
