Jon Jones

All signs have been pointing to a bout between Jon Jones and Anthony Smith going down in the near future, and now it’s being reported the fight’s a go.

Smith and Jones have traded verbal shots about fighting, since the latter reclaimed the light-heavyweight title at UFC 232, by stopping Alexander Gustafsson. Now TMZ is reporting that Dana White’s confirmed the bout is planned for UFC 235, which is taking place March 2nd in Las Vegas.

“Later this month, Jon Jones will file an application for licensure with the NSAC in order to compete at UFC 235 in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 2nd” White was quoted saying.

“Provided that license is granted, Jones will be defending his Light Heavyweight title against Anthony Smith in a 5 round main event at the T-Mobile Arena.”

So, the one outstanding issue here that White alluded to, is Jones’ recent atypical drug result, which prompted UFC 232 to be moved from Vegas to Inglewood, California. It seems clear, however, that the UFC believes the Nevada Commission will ultimately license Jones.

Smith, who is coming off a stoppage win over Volkan Oezdemir in October, also tweeted out this:
