Cerrone started calling for a fight with McGregor several weeks back, but, after he stopped Hernandez at UFC Brooklyn, he repeated that callout. McGregor proceeded to say he was interested in fighting the longtime contender, and more recently, the two had another social media exchange about throwing down.
Well, recently McGregor’s striking coach, Owen Roddy, was a guest on the Eurobash podcast. During the interview, Roddy had this to say about the possibility of a fight between McGregor and Cerrone (quotes via MMA Fighting):
“The Cerrone one, it looks good,” Roddy said.
“It’s a fan favorite fight. Cerrone comes out and he looks to swing and Conor’s going to be looking to knock him out. The banter beforehand, I don’t see it being as [turbulent], I think it will be funny. Both guys will go back and forth and that will be exciting for fans. I think it would be a very exciting fight.”
“[Max Holloway is] putting the digs in. I saw the post of him the other day in the Jameson [Distillery]…but I don’t know. I think the Cerrone one…because [McGregor and Cerrone] both engaged directly…Conor said he’d do it and then Cerrone said he’d do it…I think that might be in the pipeline.”
It’s a fight that makes sense on a couple of levels. First off, as Roddy alluded to, it’s a bout that would move plenty of tickets and pay-per-view buys. Second, it’s a match-up that makes sense for McGregor right now. While Cerrone is ridiculously well rounded and dangerous, he’s not a wrestling-centric fighter.
We shall see what happens. The Nevada Commission could be announcing today that type of disciplinary action McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov are going to face, as a result of the post-fight brawl at UFC 229.
