Daniel Cormier

Daniel Cormier hasn’t publicly backed off his repeated stance that he plans to retire next March, but according to Dana White, it “sounds” like “DC” might be rethinking that.

For some time now, Cormier has said he will not fight past his 40th birthday, which will go down in March, 2019. Even after Cormier won the heavyweight title last July, and with the returns of Jon Jones and Brock Lesnar on the horizon, the decorated fighter never said he would postpone retirement.

But, following UFC 232, which saw Jones reclaim the 205 title by stopping Alexander Gustafsson, White had this to say about Cormier’s retirement (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“I was talking to Cormier during the Jones fight,” White said. “He was obviously very angry this week leading into this fight, and there was talk from his camp about him retiring without another fight, and maybe he was just going to fight one more fight.

“It sounds to me like Cormier’s ready to fight two or three more fights before he thinks about hanging it up.”

Now, could White just be spinning this? As a means to create buzz about Cormier fighting several more times? And change the champ’s mind? It’s possible.

On the other hand, it’s also possible Cormier really wants to fight Jones one more time, as well as Brock Lesnar. Both those bouts would deliver massive paydays, and it would provide Cormier an opportunity to defeat his longtime rival in Jones.

We shall see what happens. When you consider that Cormier’s 40th birthday is less than four months away now, one would think his next bout needs to be confirmed pretty soon.
