UFC 230 Results: Daniel Cormier Submits Derrick Lewis To Remain Champion

Daniel Cormier made sure he’d be leaving Madison Square Garden in New York City with at least one title still around his waist.

Cormier, the UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion, submitted Derrick Lewis in the main event of UFC 230 Saturday night, earning his first successful title defense. Cormier locked in a rear-naked choke in the second round.

After claiming the heavyweight belt with a finish of Stipe Miocic earlier this year, “DC” became just the second fighter in UFC history to hold two titles at once. He is expected to be stripped of the 205-pound belt, as Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson meet to crown a new champion to finish the year.

For the second time in as many appearances at MSG, Chris Weidman was finished, falling to Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza via TKO in the third round in the co-main event.

The two middleweight contenders put on a war for the fans, but it was Souza who landed the finishing blow after Weidman shot in for a takedown late.

Two years ago when the UFC debuted in New York City, Weidman lost to Yoel Romero. The win marked the 26th in the career of Souza, a former Strikeforce champion.

Jared Cannonier claimed one of the biggest victories of his career when he finished David Branch in the second round, with Karl Roberson scoring a decision over Jack Marshman and Israel Adesanya kicking things off on the main card with a first round TKO vs. Derek Brunson.

Jordan Rinaldi topped Jason Knight in the prelim main event on FOX Sports 1, as Sijara Eubanks, Sheymon Moraes and Lyman Good all earned wins. Shane Burgos and Marcos Rogerio de Lima were victorious on the UFC Fight Pass prelims, as Matt Frevola and Lando Vannata fought to a majority draw.
