Scoffing at Brock Lesnar’s Chances of Beating “DC”? Brendan Schaub Has Some Words For You…

Ever since the UFC confirmed that Brock Lesnar was going to challenge for the heavyweight title next, more than a few folks have scoffed at the pro-wrestler’s chances of beating Daniel Cormier. But, Brendan Schaub is reminding people that facing Mr. Lesnar, isn’t a walk in the park.

Since Lesnar has fought just once since 2011, and because he came up short against other top fighters like Alistair Overeem and Cain Velasquez before that, the consensus is that Cormier will defend the heavyweight crown. After all, “DC” is one of the greatest fighters the game has ever known, and as noted, his teammate and training partner, Velasquez, took out Lesnar in less than one round.

Well, following Cormier’s dominant, submission win over Derrick Lewis last weekend at UFC 230, Schaub weighed in on “DC” – Lesnar, during the Below the Belt podcast. Here is some of what the former fighter had to say (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“[With Lesnar] you’re talking a complete freak,” said Schaub. “Athletically, is he the biggest freak to ever do it? He’s f**king up there, man. We don’t talk about it enough. A guy at his age and with his background – he’s not even a part time mixed martial artist. It’s a hobby for this man and can go in there and compete with the best of the best. Imagine if he dedicated his entire life from when he was young to this sport. And he’s fighting through sickness!

“He’s f**king tough to deal with. No one goes in there and is like, ‘Ah this is a gimme fight.’ Even DC’s not like that. I promise you Brock Lesnar will be a tougher fight for DC than Derrick Lewis was. We don’t give that man enough props.”

It’s hard to disagree with Schaub here, and that doesn’t mean that you’re picking Lesnar to win if you don’t. Lesnar is ridiculously massive, powerful and explosive, and due to his wrestling pedigree, he might just be a tougher match-up for Cormier than Lewis. MMA math doesn’t work, sure, but, based off what we saw at UFC 230, you could certainly argue that Lesnar has a decent shot at beating Lewis.

Chances are that Lesnar will come right out of the gates in search of a takedown, and yes, it’s hard to imagine him taking Cormier down (due to the champ’s world-class wrestling game). If he’s unable to, then things will probably go south for Lesnar in a hurry. But, during those opening minutes, Cormier could be tested much more than he was at UFC 230.
