For the second straight time, fighting at Madison Square Garden in New York City did not go as planned for Chris Weidman.
The former UFC middleweight champion was finished by Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the third round this past Saturday night at UFC 230, much like Yoel Romero did to him in the first time the Octagon set up shop in MSG.
“Unfortunately, (Saturday) night didn’t work out for me,” Weidman posted on Twitter. “Congrats to ‘Jacare’ & his family & team on a amazing win. He is a true warrior & it was an honor to share the Octagon with him.”
For Weidman, the loss was a tough one to swallow, as a win likely would have moved him into the role of No. 1 contender to the belt. Weidman was originally scheduled to meet Luke Rockhold, but an injury opened the door for Souza to step in.
“Thanks to everyone for the support, love & prayers,” Weidman added. “I appreciate it all. I will be back better from this!”
Meanwhile, division champion Robert Whittaker will defend his title against Kelvin Gastelum in early 2019. Weidman bested Gastelum when they met previously.
