man walks work 3 hours

When a local sheriff heard about a man who was walking three hours to work after his moped broke down, he knew he had to help out. The community was then propelled into action to rally around a hard worker with a no-excuses work ethic.

Isaac Saul Mettle, Jr. works at the Texas Roadhouse in Fruitland, Maryland. When his wheels gave out on him about six weeks ago, he wasn’t about to quit his job. He decided he would just get there the old fashioned way, on foot. This is an incredible commitment as he lives 10 miles from work.

“On feet it takes about three hours and on bike it’s about an hour, probably, about an hour and ten minutes. It’s just what I have to do.”

Amazingly, Mettle never once complained about taking this prolonged journey. Working at a restaurant is hard work. Imagine adding a three-hour walk to a long shift. It must have been exhausting, but there wasn’t any whining involved. While so many people are looking for a handout these days, this man didn’t even so much as whimper about his long trek to work.

“The thing is I don’t try to bring my problems to work. I don’t try to, I don’t try to take it out on anybody else,” Mettle told WMDT.

His co-workers at the restaurant launched a GoFundMe to help Mettle. It seems that even though he never complained, his struggles weren’t limited to just transportation issues.

“He no longer has any immediate family to help him through this difficult time. It is just him and his cat, Midnight,” the GoFundMe appeal reads. “We are trying to raise money to surprise him with a new moped and to also help him fix up his house, which has been destroyed due to weathering, age. His water heater is also currently broken, therefore he dos (sic)not have any running hot water. He doesn’t have the time or money to work on it currently because of the extra time it takes him to walk to and from both of his jobs. He is truly a great guy. Who has dealt with more misfortune this past year than most have seen in their lives, he still shows up with a smile on his face and not a care in the world, so you would never even know. Please help us give back to a friend in need who always gives us a smile each and every day.”

This appeal got the attention of Sheriff Mason who used Facebook to ask the community to help out. With our entitlement culture being out of control, a strong work-ethic like Mettle’s should be fostered and rewarded. Here is a man who wants to work and is willing to go above and beyond to get there.

Patrick Adkins, of PNR Auto, decided to step up with a very generous offer. He is gifting Mettle a car and even offering to cover future repairs on the vehicle.

“It’s part of the community. When you have somebody that’s a worker like that, you know there’s so many people who want something for free and don’t want to take an earning,” Adkins said. “Then you have this gentleman that doesn’t want to complain and he keeps on going regardless of the situation he just keeps on going.”

Other local companies also wanted to help out. A landscaping company offered to help with Mettle’s lawncare when needed. A plumbing and HVAC company also offered its services. He even got gift cards to a grocery store.

Mettle was fighting back tears of gratitude as the community rallied around him. He said it has made him speechless.

Recently, a man who walked through the night to get to his first day of work was rewarded for his work ethic when the CEO gave him his personal car. It is great to see such strong character be rewarded. Click here to read about that!
