It’s hard to believe that nine years have passed since Cris Cyborg fought Gina Carano for the Strikeforce featherweight title.
Current Bellator president Scott Coker placed the female fighers in the main event, making the first time such a headline bout took place in North America.
Cyborg is currently the UFC champion and pushing for a champion vs. champion match with bantamweight titleholder Amanda Nunes. The bout has been rumored for the end of the year.
“9 years ago today I fought Gina Carano as the main event for Strikeforce MMA to become Scott Coker’s 145lbs female featherweight world champion,” Cyborg posted on Instagram. “The fight was the first time two women had been a main event for a major North American MMA promotion with an excess of 14,000 fans attending the HP Pavilion in San Jose CA to watch the event.
“The fight was watched by more than 856,000 viewers becoming the most watched MMA fight in the history of Showtime TV. I want to thank all the fans who have joined and remained on Cyborg Nation since that time.
“In 2016 against Lina Lansburg more than 1.3 million of you tuned in to watch the fight making it the most watched female fight in the history (FOX Sports 1). 2017 my fights against Tonya Evinger and Holly Holm were the 2nd and 3rd most purchased UFC PPVs of the year.
“2018 I am hoping to give the sport and the fans another historic bout by making the Superfight against Nunes everyone is wanting to see.”
