WWE announced Wednesday that the second annual Mae Young Classic will premiere September 5 – and Beth Phoenix and Renee Young will be on commentary.

According to a press release issued by WWE:

Calling the action of this year’s Mae Young Classic will be Michael Cole, WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix and Renee Young, marking the first time in WWE history that two women are in the announce booth. Phoenix, a three-time WWE Women’s Champion and former Divas Champion, most recently lent her insight at the announce desk as part of this year’s Mixed Match Challenge.

Phoenix and Young both tweeted their excitement following the history-making announcement.

As stated in the press release, Phoenix recently provided commentary for the Mixed Match Challenge. However, fans might not know that Young also has commentary experience: she briefly worked the announce booth for both NXT and Main Event. Coincidentally, Young told Lilian Garcia on the most recent episode of the “Chasing Glory” podcast that she didn’t enjoy doing commentary on Main Event because she felt that she wasn’t seasoned or knowledgeable enough about wrestling to work a two-person booth. It will be interesting, then, to see what role she plays on the Mae Young Classic commentary team.

Furthermore, it’s safe to assume that Phoenix, Young, and Cole will provide the commentary for the final of the tournament, which will take place at WWE Evolution on October 28th. Phoenix was previously announced to appear at the historic all-women’s pay-per-view.

The press release also confirmed 31 of 32 competitors for the tournament. The final slot will be determined on tonight’s episode of NXT when Vanessa Bourne and Taynara Conti face off in a qualifying match.

Additionally, a “Parade of Champions” introducing the 31 confirmed competitors will air tonight LIVE at 7 p.m. EST on WWE’s YouTube channel, Twitter, and Facebook Live channel.

The second annual Mae Young Classic will premiere Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 9/8 C, immediately following NXT.
