Of all the retired pro wrestlers out there, Shawn Michaels is among those whom fans would most like to see return to the ring.

For a while it seemed like Michaels was pretty darn happy with retirement, and he revealed on the Sam Roberts Wrestling Podcast he doesn’t plan on ever coming back, and he probably never will.

Why? Because he just doesn’t want to deal with the whole process of making a comeback:

[…] [H]onestly, the greatest thing about those matches is the after. Okay? It’s the doing it, it’s the doing it in the ring, and then, it’s the after when it’s phenomenal to go, ‘that was awesome,’ sitting there with Taker and Michael Hayes and just basking in that moment for whatever. But the whole process up to it is just … even just last year, I sat there and all I did is walk out there for five minutes and my wife sat there and looked at me and she goes, ‘oh my goodness,’ for the first time the light went off. And she goes, ‘I understand it.’ She goes, ‘it’s the whole process going up that you don’t want to go through.’ She said, she goes, ‘I’ve seen you do it. All you do is walk out for five minutes last year and kick somebody, you can do that with your eyes closed and you still went into that place where you’re focused, you get quiet, and there’s the six weeks of training.’

Can you blame Michaels? A lot goes into preparing for a wrestling match, from getting back into ring shape to getting showstopping new ring gear and putting in the time and effort to hype the comeback.

But that was last year. In a recent interview, Michaels revealed he might be open to one more match. Here’s what he told SkySports:

“It would have to be done the right way and just for one match rather than something that ran for longer.

“It could be possible but people would have to accept they wouldn’t be getting the Showstopper, Mr WrestleMania, and that I’m 52 years old now.”

The man who retired Michaels – the Undertaker – remains a semi-active competitor despite being a year his senior, and one of his closest friends, Triple H, continues to have matches at 48.

Michaels admits the most likely option for his return would be in a tag-team match, possibly as part of a DX reunion, but that there are some great modern-day WWE talents who he would have loved to have shared a ring.

Wow. Shawn Michaels back for one more match? How would you feel about it? He’s being modest, Michaels is still in phenomenal shape. I wouldn’t expect any of his old classics, but I would love to see him in a match against AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan, or maybe even NXT’s Johnny Gargano.
