Who is challenging Brock Lesnar for the Universal Title? We don’t know and won’t know for a while. The Number 1 Contender’s match to take place at Extreme Rules was canceled a week after WWE announced it. RAW GM Kurt Angle blamed a “contract dispute” which led to Bobby Lashley and Roman Reigns accusing Lesnar of ducking them. This was after Lesnar’s advocate Paul Heyman went off on Angle and WWE for daring to pick an opponent for Brock without the Beast’s approval. While Heyman targeted WWE and several top WWE stars, the Advocate seemed laser-focused on Raw GM Angle. And this tweet from Angle further establishes that perhaps Brock’s next opponent isn’t Reigns or Lashley.

Angle previously defend Brock from criticism. That is no longer the case. Angle has wrestled five times since his return to WWE in 2017. All of the matches have been multi-man affairs. If Angle ends up challenging Brock at SummerSlam, then it would be his first singles match in WWE in over a decade.

Could Kurt Win?

If the rumors and speculation are true that Lesnar is leaving WWE this summer, then it would make sense for Lesnar to drop the title to Angle. However, I wouldn’t expect a lengthy reign. Braun Strowman as “Monster In The Bank” could strike at any time. This could be after Angle and Lesnar battle it out with Strowman coming to pick over the carcass. But that wouldn’t fit in with Strowman’s persona. Perhaps we’ll see a scenario similar to Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 31, cashing-in mid-match to make it a triple threat.

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that Angle is the best choice to face Lesnar. It saves a lot of other talents from losing to Brock while giving Angle a chance to show that he can still go in the ring. And perhaps WWE wants the Universal title to be their “Legends title” being passed from one part-timer to the next? Fans would hate this, but WWE isn’t afraid of a little disgust from their paying audience.

It wouldn’t be the first time the two met. Lesnar and Angle clashed in a botchy but still memorable classic at WrestleMania 19.
