The struggles of Mauro Ranallo and his bipolar disorder are widely documented, but now they have been released in a documentary on Showtime, the network where the NXT broadcaster announces premier boxing matches.

Suffering from mental illness myself, I find it important that people are aware of the issues out there. I have suffered from agoraphobia for years and am on the slow road to recovery. Still, despite my problems, bipolar disorder is a whole lot harder to live with. A lot of people do not know much about it. So, a documentary surrounding a well-known public figure is certainly a good thing.

The documentary follows Mauro Ranallo and his struggles with being bi-polar and in the public eye. It is set the premiere on Friday, May 25th at 9 pm EST during Mental Health Awareness Month. Here is the trailer for the upcoming documentary:

How This Trailer Has Impacted Me

Honestly, the trailer had an impact on me. When Ranallo said “quit being a wussy”, “go out, get some fresh air”, those are the things people tell me. If you are not familiar with agoraphobia, it is a mental health problem that causes me to have an irrational fear of going outside. When I head to the supermarket, for example, I get terrible panic attacks. I avoided going out for years and even became housebound at one point. Even though I can now go to a store, I still have intense fear every time I go outside.

People who do not suffer from a mental health problem can never understand what it is like. Sorry, you just cannot grasp it. Other sufferers will probably recognize statements such as “get over it” or “quit being such a wuss”, contrary to those who do not. Mental health problems must be understood and this documentary is certainly the first step to generating more understanding and acceptance among non-sufferers. I will certainly watch. Maybe one day… People will stop telling us to “stop being a wuss”.
