It never ceases to amaze us how ignorant some Americans can be about basic facts concerning our country! While the lack of basic knowledge some people have of their own nation can be funny, it can also be very alarming, as it shows us just how uneducated some Americans are.
Knowing this, late night host Jimmy Kimmel decided to take to the streets to see if his fellow Americans could identify our states by their official abbreviations and possibly give his audience a reason to laugh at their expense in the process. However, the results were so far off and shocking, they left even the seasoned host speechless.
“Recently there were primaries and caucuses held in Michigan, Hawaii, Idaho and Mississippi all on the same day. As you are probably aware, those states are abbreviated as MI, HI, ID and MS, respectively,” the video’s description reads. “Jimmy wondered how many people actually know these very common state abbreviations, so we went on the street to find out.”

As the video goes on, the answers people give for the abbreviations get crazier and crazier. Answers to what MI stands for include Miami and Minneapolis, which aren’t even states! The abbreviation that seemed to give people the most trouble was ID. Some people answered Indiana, which is somewhat of an understandable mistake, but others flat out had no idea which states to even guess!
In the end, Kimmel did his job and created a humorous video that also serves as a reminder of how important it is that we educate ourselves about the basic facts of our own country.
